Naoshima Day Trip from Okayama: A Realistic One-Day Itinerary

Naoshima is famous for contemporary art, but planning a day trip there can feel surprisingly complicated.

The island itself is small. The tricky part is connecting the train from Okayama, the ferry from Uno, local buses, and timed museum entry without turning the day into a rush from one place to the next.

The good news is that Naoshima is very doable as a day trip from Okayama if you keep the itinerary focused.

This route centers on Chichu Art Museum, with time for the Red Pumpkin near Miyanoura Port, lunch and a walk around Honmura, and Naoshima New Museum of Art in the afternoon.

Rather than trying to visit every museum on the island, this itinerary leaves enough time to actually enjoy the places you came to see.

Naoshima Day Trip at a Glance

  • Start: Okayama Station
  • Route: Okayama → Uno → Miyanoura → Chichu Art Museum → Honmura → Miyanoura → Uno → Okayama
  • Highlights: Red Pumpkin, Chichu Art Museum, Honmura, Naoshima New Museum of Art
  • Lunch: APRON CAFE
  • Suggested Chichu Art Museum reservation: Around 10:00 AM
  • Sample ferry from Uno: 8:22 AM
  • Sample ferry back: 5:35 PM from Miyanoura
  • Island transport: Town bus + free museum-area shuttle
  • Best for: Travelers who want to experience Naoshima without trying to see everything in one day

The most important thing to book first is Chichu Art Museum.

Once you have your admission time, build the ferry and island transport around it.

Is Naoshima Really Possible as a Day Trip from Okayama?

Yes — but it works best as a full-day trip rather than a quick side trip.

From Okayama, you first travel by JR to Uno Station. Uno Port is about a five-minute walk from the station, and the ferry crossing to Miyanoura takes about 20 minutes.

The journey involves several connections, but the bigger challenge is deciding what not to include.

Naoshima has Chichu Art Museum, Benesse House Museum, Lee Ufan Museum, Naoshima New Museum of Art, the Art House Project, outdoor artworks, cafés, beaches, and more.

Trying to cover all of them in one day leaves very little room for bus waits, lunch, delays, or simply spending more time somewhere you enjoy.

This itinerary therefore focuses on three areas:

  • Miyanoura — arrival and Red Pumpkin
  • Museum area — Chichu Art Museum
  • Honmura — lunch, neighborhood walk and Naoshima New Museum of Art

If you want to visit several additional museums or explore the Art House Project in depth, staying overnight makes more sense.

How to Get from Okayama to Naoshima

Basic route:

Okayama Station → Uno Station → Uno Port → Miyanoura Port

Okayama Station to Uno Station

Take a JR train toward Uno.

The journey generally takes around 50–60 minutes depending on the service and connection.

For the sample itinerary in this guide, aim to reach Uno before 8:15 AM.

Avoid planning an extremely tight train-to-ferry connection. Missing the ferry could also affect your timed Chichu Art Museum reservation.

Uno Station to Uno Port

Uno Port is only about a five-minute walk from Uno Station.

Even with the short walk, leave some extra time for finding the ferry terminal and boarding.

Uno Port to Miyanoura Port

For a day built around a 10:00 AM Chichu Art Museum reservation, the 8:22 AM ferry from Uno is a useful option.

It reaches Miyanoura at approximately 8:42 AM.

Route Approx. time Cost
Okayama → Uno About 50–60 min Check current JR fare
Uno Station → Uno Port About 5 min on foot Free
Uno → Miyanoura About 20 min ¥370 one way

Book Chichu Art Museum First

If there is one reservation to make before planning the rest of your day, it is Chichu Art Museum.

Admission requires a specific date and time. If online tickets for a time slot sell out, tickets are not sold on site for that sold-out slot.

For this itinerary, a reservation around 10:00 AM works well with the morning ferry from Uno.

Designed by Tadao Ando, Chichu Art Museum is built largely underground and houses permanent works by Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria.

Do not plan to rush through it just to add another museum.

Allow roughly 90 minutes for this itinerary.

Naoshima One-Day Itinerary

This route assumes a 10:00 AM Chichu Art Museum reservation.

8:42 AM — Arrive at Miyanoura Port

After the roughly 20-minute crossing from Uno, you arrive at Miyanoura, Naoshima’s main gateway.

Take a few minutes to get oriented before heading toward the museum area.

8:45 AM — Red Pumpkin

Yayoi Kusama’s Red Pumpkin stands near Miyanoura Port, so this is the easiest time to see it.

Allow around 10–15 minutes rather than treating it as a long sightseeing stop.

From Miyanoura, use the Naoshima Town Bus toward Tsutsuji-so. From there, transfer to the free Benesse shuttle serving the museum area.

The town bus does not run directly to Chichu Art Museum.

10:00 AM — Chichu Art Museum

Chichu Art Museum is the main anchor of the day, and it is worth giving the museum enough time rather than treating it as another quick stop.

Designed by Tadao Ando and opened in 2004, the museum was built mostly underground so that it would not dominate the landscape of the Seto Inland Sea. Despite that subterranean design, natural light enters the galleries and changes the atmosphere of the spaces and artworks throughout the day and across the seasons.

The permanent collection is deliberately focused. Five paintings from Claude Monet’s Water Lilies series are displayed alongside works by James Turrell and Walter De Maria. The galleries were designed around the works themselves, so the architecture, light and art are closely connected rather than experienced as separate elements.

This is not a museum where you need to rush through a long checklist of galleries. Moving slowly through a relatively small number of carefully designed spaces is a large part of the experience.

Give yourself around 90 minutes here.

After Chichu Art Museum, take the museum shuttle back toward Tsutsuji-so and transfer to the town bus for Honmura.

Around Noon — Lunch in Honmura

Honmura offers a change of pace after the museum area.

Traditional houses, small cafés and contemporary art spaces are mixed into a residential neighborhood, making it worth spending some time here rather than using it purely as a transfer point.

12:00 PM — APRON CAFE

APRON CAFE is a convenient lunch stop for this route.

The café uses Setouchi ingredients and locally grown vegetables in its seasonal dishes. The seasonal special set is currently around ¥1,680.

Hours: 11:00 AM–around 2:30 PM
Closed: Mondays and irregular days

Check the latest opening information before visiting.

Allow roughly an hour for lunch.

1:00 PM — Explore Honmura

After lunch, walk around Honmura.

The neighborhood is home to the Art House Project and ANDO MUSEUM, but you do not need to add all of them to this itinerary.

If you are running ahead of schedule, one Art House Project site can be an optional addition.

Otherwise, simply leave some time to explore the neighborhood before the next museum.

Around 1:40 PM — Naoshima New Museum of Art

Continue uphill from Honmura to Naoshima New Museum of Art, one of the newest additions to the island’s art scene.

Opened in May 2025, the museum is Tadao Ando’s tenth architectural work for Benesse Art Site Naoshima. Its three-level structure — one floor above ground and two below — sits on a hill near the Honmura district.

While Chichu Art Museum centers on a small group of permanently installed works, this museum broadens the day in a different direction. Its collection and exhibitions focus on contemporary artists from Japan and other parts of Asia, including major works and pieces commissioned specifically for the museum. It also hosts changing exhibitions and public programs, so what you encounter can vary between visits.

That contrast is one reason these two museums work well together in a one-day itinerary: Chichu Art Museum offers a highly site-specific experience built around art, architecture and natural light, while the New Museum introduces a wider and more changing view of contemporary art from across Asia.

Under its normal schedule, the museum is open 10:00 AM–4:30 PM, with last admission at 4:00 PM.

Online admission: ¥1,500
On-site admission: ¥1,700
Age 15 and under: Free

Allow around 90 minutes.

Around 3:20 PM — Leave Some Free Time

Use the remaining time for Honmura, a drink, or simply getting to the bus stop early.

This buffer is intentional.

Naoshima’s buses are small, and building the itinerary around the last possible connection is not worth the risk.

Around 4:20 PM — Return to Miyanoura

Head back to Miyanoura well before the return ferry.

That leaves roughly an hour around the port and gives you some protection against delays or a full bus.

5:35 PM — Ferry Back to Uno

The sample itinerary uses the 5:35 PM ferry from Miyanoura, arriving at Uno at approximately 5:55 PM.

From Uno Port, walk back to Uno Station and continue to Okayama.

A later 7:02 PM ferry normally provides another option, but always check the current timetable before relying on it.

Sample Schedule

The following is a sample, not a guaranteed connection schedule.

It is based on a 10:00 AM Chichu Art Museum reservation and current transport patterns.

Time Plan
Around 7:10 AM Leave Okayama
Before 8:15 AM Arrive at Uno and walk to the port
8:22 AM Ferry to Miyanoura

Around 9:00 AM Town bus + museum shuttle toward Chichu Art Museum
10:00–11:30 AM Chichu Art Museum
Late morning Shuttle + town bus to Honmura
12:00–1:00 PM APRON CAFE
1:00–1:40 PM Honmura
1:40–3:20 PM Naoshima New Museum of Art

Around 4:20 PM Return to Miyanoura
5:35 PM Ferry to Uno
5:55 PM Arrive at Uno

Bus or E-Bike?

E-bikes are popular on Naoshima, but for this itinerary the town bus + museum shuttle is the simpler baseline.

Bus + Shuttle E-Bike
Best for Fixed museum itinerary Flexible exploration
Advantage Cheap and straightforward More independence
Drawback Limited frequency/capacity Weather, hills and access restrictions

Town bus:
¥100 per ride

Benesse museum shuttle:
Free

How Much Does the Day Cost?

Expect roughly ¥8,000–¥9,000 per person for the core itinerary, depending on your JR fare, travel date and food choices.

Item Estimated cost
JR Okayama ↔ Uno Check current fare
Uno ↔ Miyanoura ferry ¥740
Town buses About ¥300
Benesse shuttle Free
Chichu Art Museum ¥2,500 weekday / ¥2,700 weekend & holiday online
Naoshima New Museum of Art ¥1,500 online
APRON CAFE About ¥1,680

Optional museums, snacks, shopping and bicycle rental are not included.

What to Skip on a One-Day Trip

Do not treat every major Naoshima attraction as essential.

For this route, leave these outside the fixed schedule:

  • Lee Ufan Museum
  • Benesse House Museum
  • Every Art House Project site
  • ANDO MUSEUM
  • A long beach stop

That is about time, not quality.

Two substantial museum visits plus Miyanoura and Honmura already make a full day.

If you finish early, adding one Art House Project site in Honmura is a more practical bonus than crossing the island again for another major museum.

Should You Stay Overnight?

A day trip works well if Chichu Art Museum plus a focused selection of Naoshima is your priority.

Consider staying overnight if you want to visit several major museums, explore more of the Art House Project, or experience the island without organizing the entire day around ferry times.

For travelers already based in Okayama, however, you do not need to stay overnight to have a worthwhile first visit.

Practical Tips

Book Chichu Art Museum first

Secure your timed Chichu Art Museum admission before building the rest of the itinerary.

Check the official calendar

Opening hours and closure dates can change, especially during exhibition changes, holidays and maintenance periods.

Check for special opening hours

Museum hours can change during holidays, special periods, exhibition changes, or severe weather. Always check the official calendar shortly before your visit.

Recheck transport before traveling

Confirm the latest JR, ferry, town-bus and museum-shuttle schedules shortly before your trip.

Carry small change

The town bus costs ¥100 per ride.

Do not depend on the last bus

The town bus has limited capacity. Keep a buffer before museum reservations and ferries.

Travel light

You will move between trains, ferries, buses and walking sections throughout the day.

Wear comfortable shoes

The island is compact but not completely flat.

Check the weather

Bad weather can affect outdoor artworks, cycling and, in severe conditions, transport.

FAQ

Can you visit Naoshima as a day trip from Okayama?

Yes. It works well as a full-day trip if you leave Okayama early and limit the number of major museums.

How long does it take to get from Okayama to Naoshima?

Allow roughly 1.5 hours when the train and ferry connections line up well. Leave extra transfer time rather than planning around the shortest possible connection.

Do I need to book Naoshima in advance?

Book Chichu Art Museum in advance because admission is timed. Buying Naoshima New Museum of Art admission online in advance is also useful and currently cheaper than buying it on site.

Which ferry works with this itinerary?

The sample itinerary uses the 8:22 AM ferry from Uno, which reaches Miyanoura at 8:42 AM and works well with a 10:00 AM Chichu Art Museum reservation.

Do I need a car?

No. This itinerary can be completed using trains, ferries, the town bus, the free museum-area shuttle and walking.

Is an e-bike better than the bus?

It depends on how you want to explore. An e-bike offers more freedom, while the bus and museum shuttle are easier to build around a fixed Chichu Art Museum reservation.

How many museums can I realistically visit?

Two major museums is a comfortable target for this itinerary. Adding several more significantly reduces your buffer for transport, lunch and Honmura.

What if I miss the 5:35 PM ferry?

A later ferry normally operates, but always check the current Shikoku Kisen timetable rather than treating it as a guaranteed backup.

Conclusion

Naoshima rewards a little restraint.

You could spend the day trying to fit in one more museum or artwork, but leaving some empty space makes this route much more enjoyable.

Book Chichu Art Museum first, keep the route focused, and let the rest of the day fit around it.
